An Ohio lamprey is one of the two most common parasitic species of lamprey. Despite being parasitic, the Ohio lamprey is a non-invasive parasite and rarely ever kill their host. Like all lampreys, Ohio lampreys have long eel like bodies and a jawless mouth. They have a disc like mouth with rows of two pointed teeth around the mouth. All sea lampreys have dorsal fins, but the Ohio lamprey has a single dorsal fin. The Ohio lamprey has 53-62 muscle segments called myomeres. Adults are a light tan or silvery tan in color, before spawning. After spawning adults become black or blue in color and typically grow 10-14 inches, but can reach 15 inches.
