Save the ohio lamprey
LAWS and Projects in place
Ohio Administrative Code 1531.25 Division of Wildlife protects all species of sea lamprey's in Ohio from being held in captivity, imported, or sold live. Besides Ohio, the Ohio Lamprey is protected in Georgia, Kentucky, New York, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Virginia.
How can we help?
We can help protect the Ohio Lamprey by raising awareness for their endangerment. We also have to show people why to care about the Ohio lamprey to get them to want to help this endangered animal. Ohio lampreys migrate throughout their life cycle. The construction of dams in large rivers prevents them from migrating from habitat to habitat. We can help by speaking out against the construction of dams in their habitats. We could also come up with a solution that allows them to still be able to migrate. Organizations, such as "Luna the Lamprey", are constantly making an effort to spread awareness about the endangered lamprey through events and fundraisers. Most famous of these is Luna the lamprey's "Youth and the Great Outdoors" program. This is a summer camp in which hundreds of children are educated by professionals trying to save the Lamprey. But don't be discouraged if camp isn't the thing for you! There are plenty of ways that you can help spread awareness from your own home! By donating to organizations focused on preserving the lamprey, you are indirectly preventing harmful structures from being built near aquatic environments!
