tracking the ohio lamprey
Technology is advancing that allows researchers to track the movement of the Ohio lamprey and many other types of fish. There are things such as sonar based cameras that sit at the mouths of lakes and rivers to track and to know where they are at all times. The sonar based cameras allow us to see anything that comes around the cameras, so if a Ohio lamprey comes near they can see it. They can also use fish transmitters to track them. They start off by cutting the stomach of the fish to put in the transmitter. Then, once they're in the stomach, the antenna sticks out of the stomach so we have a good signal on where the fish is. We can also use radio telemetry to track fish. Radio telemetry is tracking with transmitters to track the fish on where its located. There are many types of transmitters such as external mount (saddle), external mount, body implant-coil antenna, body implant trailing, and the whip antenna transmitter. My personal opinion on transmitters is that I would use the external mount (saddle) because there is no surgery involved in the process and it clips right on the dorsal fin and there is no harm done at all.
